I didn't want to keep AI Suite 3 installed just to control those fans so I uninstalled it to control them through bios. So I have the top and rear exhaust plugged into the power supply and the front and bottom intake are plugged into the CPU_OPT header. I think the side fans were disturbing the air flow, so I have unplugged them. After testing and benchmarking the side fans barely affected the temperature, sometimes it would lower the cpu temp by 2 deg c but increase the gpu temps by 1-2 degree. I seem to have sorted the problem myself. I don't want to buy all new 4 pin fans, are the amount of pins the problem? I know 4 pins use PWM to pulse the speed but I have read that 3 pin/molex are still controllable through most motherboards by adjusting voltage? Do I need to buy a fan controller?Īny advice welcome, thank you in advance. I am not using the most up to date BIOS as until this point I have had no issues with my system so didn't think it was worth the risk, I am using 0310 and ASUS EZ update is suggesting 0312. When I try changing the settings in Fan Xpert of CHA_FAN2 to silent or full speed it only affects the speed of the CPU fan! So CHA_FAN1(2 pin cables) does not get recognised at all. I installed asus AI Suite 3 so I could try Fan Xpert4, after running the fan tuning it only recognises the cpu and the fans plugged into CHA_FAN2 but they have min RPM of 1,356 and a max of 1,362 so I have no control over that anyway! I have tried plugging into the AIO pump instead but it made no difference. I have tried controlling the fans using QFAN in the bios, tried PWM and DC mode, tested all the options like SILENT and it didn't make any difference. The CPU fan is obviously taking up the CPU_FAN slot and I am not sure if the CPU_OPT is suitable. I have 3 options on where to plug them in on my ASUS B250F Strix motherboard, CHA_FAN1, CHA_FAN2 & AIO pump. The 2 side fans are probably excessive and might not get used depending on temps, in which case I would just unplug them or ideally run them at a very low rpm. All fans are 120mm, 2 exhaust fans run direct from PSU, 2 side fans are 2 pin connectors (ignore above diagram where it says all are 3 pin) and the other 2 fans (bottom & front intake) are 3 pin connectors.
